Optoelectronic device and physical layer technology for high-speed underwater wireless optical communications

In recent years, high-speed visible light communications (VLC) have been identified as an essential part of optical wireless communication technologies for next generation 6G network. As one of the fast-growing techniques in VLC, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) offers the unique advantages of enabling ultra-high data rate Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT).

The presentation focuses on the development of III-nitride devices and related physical layer techniques for UWOC. The outlook of future trends will also be discussed in this talk.

About Chao Shen
Dr. Chao Shen is currently a faculty member at the School of Information Science and Technology, Fudan University. He has published 100+ peer-reviewed publications in the fields of GaN optoelectronics devices, semiconductor lasers, superluminescent diodes, photonics integrated circuit, VLC, LiFi and underwater wireless optical communications (UWOC). Dr. Shen has served as TPC member and invited speaker in many IEEE, Optica, and SPIE conferences. He is the associated editor of IEEE Photonics Journal and member of APL Photonics Early Career Editorial Advisory Board. Dr. Shen co-authored a book on the principle and applications of novel light-emitting devices for visible light communication. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from KAUST and his BSc in Materials Physics from Fudan University.

About Fudan University
Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded by a Chinese person. The two characters, fù (“return”) and dàn (“dawn”) were borrowed from A Commentary on The Classic of History (《尚书大传·虞夏传》), of which the part on the Yu and the Xia dynasties mentions: “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning radiance returns at dawn.” In 1917, the institution was renamed Fudan University, which has been kept ever since.
