Light communication technologies are creating a new breakthrough to offer new added services in a sustainable way. In this presentation we will first present the Light Communication Alliance regrouping key actors of this domain. The missions of the Alliance as well as key messaging will be provided. In a second part, this presentation will show how this technology could play an important role to design greener end-to-end solutions by combining optical wired and wireless communication technologies while paving the way to heterogeneous technologies for access points.
In particular the presentation shows that this light communication technology offers an efficient complementarity technology to RF systems to create a convergent solution between fixed and mobile networks. Finally, important new challenges will be described to anticipate the 6G needs.
Presented by Dominique Chiaroni, Vice-Chair of the LCA and Bell Labs Senior Researcher.
Dominique is driven to make ICT greener. The optical technology and in particular the association wired and wireless optical technologies have been identified as a key technology to help 5G and tomorrow 6G to be greener! Light communication technologies could play a fundamental role in the next years, since light has fundamental advantages : higher security, and higher physical bit rate at a high energy efficiency with respect to RF technologies.

About Nokia Network France
Nokia creates technology that helps the world act together. As a trusted partner for critical networks, we are committed to innovation and technology leadership across mobile, fixed and cloud networks. We create value with intellectual property and long-term research, led by the award-winning Nokia Bell Labs. Adhering to the highest standards of integrity and security, we help build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable and inclusive world.
In France, Nokia has a strong technological base that relies on both cutting-edge Research and Development teams and very strong links with the French digital ecosystem. Our activities are spread over two major sites in Lannion (Côtes d’Armor) and Paris-Saclay (Massy and Nozay, Essonne). These sites play a leading role in the design and marketing of the group’s innovations in the field of 5G, radio transport, cyber security and the Internet of Things.
Nokia Networks France is Nokia’s legal entity in France (excluding submarine cable (ASN) activities), it also hosts the French teams of Nokia Bell Labs.
Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned industrial research arm of Nokia. Over its more than 90-year history, Bell Labs has invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has resulted in 9 Nobel Prizes, eight Emmys, five Turing Awards, two Grammys and an Oscar for technical innovations. Nokia Bell Labs leads innovative research focused on the current Nokia Business Group Portfolio for both short and long-term excellence. Moreover, Nokia Bell Labs explores the fundamental and innovative research focused on new Nokia value chains as well as on opportunities beyond the current Nokia BG Product and Solution Portfolio including new market space, technology licensing and possible “spin out” opportunities.
Dominique Chiaroni is speaker at the 2023 edition of the LiFi Conference.
